Since my retirement, I have been doing volunteer work at Tung Ling Community Services, GoodLife Befrienders (house visits), Helping Hands (polyclinics) as well as Seniors Learning Camp Alumni (SLCA) under Southeast Community Development Council (SE CDC). I enjoy doing community services through them.
The most challenging part of volunteering at Tung Ling Senior Activity Centre is to toggle my time to commit myself to attend regularly and also be able to spend quality time with my family.
The most memorable moments I have are the volunteer’s trainings, the retreats and the weekly fellowship, sharing experiences, eating and joking with my fellow volunteers whom I don’t see so often.
I also enjoy the close rapport with our senior members in our programme whenever we have organized outings like visitation to places of interest as well as shopping tours. I am very touched whenever an elderly member tells me she misses me and is very happy to see me and asks about my health.
I enjoy serving others.
Although I have dialysis 3 times a week and together with the help of my siblings, care for my 93 year old aged mother who has mild dementia, I find that doing volunteer work actually helps me to relax and de-stress.
For all our prospective volunteers, I believe you will be able to find joy and satisfaction when you share your time to meet or help others around you. With a positive outlook life will be more meaningful.
